[edit] Forum on Trade and Health in the Pacific

PHM Oz, in collaboration with the La Trobe Institute for Human Security and the Public Health Association of Australia, organised a public forum on trade and health in the Pacific. The forum was held in Melbourne on the 12th-13th April 2010. Fran Baum and David Legge, on behalf of PHM Australia, wrote a letter to Hon Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister, in January 2009 regarding the Australian Government's response to the Gaza conflict. Click here to read the letter.

[edit] Successful workshop in Brisbane

PHM Oz worked with the Political Economy of Health and Primary Health Care Special Interest Groups of the Public Health Association of Australia to present a one-day workshop Back to the grassroots: Rediscovering the values on health and social justice prior to the Population Health Congress in July 2008. [edit] Northern Territory Aboriginal Intervention

PHM Oz is deeply concerned by the actions of the former Howard government regarding Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. We developed a response and put out a Call to Action.

[edit] Health for All Symposium - NZ

Our New Zealand/Aotearoa colleagues are hosting a symposium "Health for All" in Aotearoa: How can we achieve the vision? in Auckland. The symposium will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Alma-Ata Declaration on Primary Health Care and discuss what actions are needed in the next thirty years to achieve the vision of "Health for All". We are concerned about current legislation before parliament regarding the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. We have created a webpage on Changes to PBS Legislation to post relevant information as we learn more about what the changes might mean.

[edit] Global Health Watch: Opportunity to participate

Attention academics and post-graduate students!

The Global Health Watch is an alternative world health report from a civil society perspective that is produced every two years. One of the forthcoming chapters in the next Watch will include a critical evaluation of the positive and negative policies and activities of the US government's foreign assistance programmes, including Pepfar. We are looking for help from academic and post-graduate student activists to assist with this chapter by conducting a review of secondary information and available literature on a number of topics. PHM Victoria held a small meeting for interested people in March 2007. We are interested in hearing from anyone in Australia who has an interest in the Right to Health. See the PHM global site or for more information about Australia's involvement email us.

PHM Oz has begun holding monthly internet workshops to debate current global health issues. We are currently working on compulsory licensing and have developed a resources page. See here for more information on how to participate in internet workshops.

[edit] Doctors for Iraq - Australian Tour

Dr Salam Ismael is a doctor from Iraq who came to the second People's Health Assembly in Ecuador. Dr Salam made a huge impression on those present. Some PHM activists were involved in helping bring Dr Salam to speak in Australia. Professor Fran Baum, WHO Commissioner on the Social Determinants of Health and PHM activist from South Australia coauthored an article in the Public Health Association of Australia's newsletter about one of Dr Salam's presentations. In February 2006 a group appointed by the PHM Global Steering Committee met in Frankfurt to discuss recommendations for the new governance structure for PHM globally and a new location for the Global Secretariat. See the photos

Following the release of the Global Health Watch in Cuenca Ecuador during the second People's Health Assembly, Professors Fran Baum and Gavin Mooney launched the alternative world health report in Perth on Monday 26 September. Read more

Berkeley, Bangalore and Manila; 28 April 05: The newly appointed chief of UNICEF has come under heavy criticism from health activists worldwide. PHM is launching a "UNICEF WATCH" to monitor the new director's 'anti-children' activities and thus defend UNICEF and the rights of children. Read more

-A Global Day of Action is being organized on Feb 26, 2005 to protest the Patents Amendment bill that is currently under consideration by Indian parliament. India is under pressure to comply with the TRIPS agreement on Intellectual Property Rights, as dictated by World Trade Organization (WTO). This peoples’ mobilization effort is aimed at building solidarity around pressurizing the Indian Government to reassess the Bill to take into account all the flexibilities offered by TRIPS. The bill in its current form is even more stringent than what the TRIPS regulations demand. Ideally, we believe it is in the best interest of people in India that TRIPS itself be eliminated altogether.
