Get involved!
Firstly, this is not difficult! It may take a little while to get the hang of using the Wiki but it isn't hard and you have help not far away... Please read the instructions below and try by yourself first. If you are having problems, please email Sally.
Hopefully by the time you have finished with this page, you will hopefully be able to alter these instructions. Then you can add the comment that you wish someone else had written here :o)
How to use a Wiki
- As a member of this website you can edit any of the pages except the Main Page.
- Don't worry, you cannot do any permanent damage :-) Even if you deleted the whole lot of pages, we can go back and retrieve all the information.
- To edit a page, click on the blue edit link that you can find at the top of each section. It is located just above the section heading on the right hand side of the page. Click on the edit link for this section then find the cancel button at the bottom of the page.
- To edit a whole page (which will allow you to create new sections) click on the 'edit' tab at the top left of the page.
- Editing help is next to the Cancel link when you go in to edit a page or section. Click on the 'edit' link for this section and go and explore the Editing help link. Follow the "Wiki markup language" link.
- The easiest way to learn how to make pages look like you want them to is to copy what others have done. Click on the 'edit' link for any page or section and see how it was created.
- Text that is on a new line but not separated by a blank line will result in the text all being put together.
- The 'Save page' and 'Show preview' buttons at the bottom of the editing page are obvious - just remember that 'Show preview' does NOT save your changes - it just shows you what it WOULD look like if you hit 'Save page'.
- Have fun!
More advanced stuff
- To make a new page, type the name of the page inside double brackets eg. [[New Page]]. Think carefully about the name of the page as it will be displayed at the top of the page. Make it specific to what the page is about and make it make sense as it will be visible at the top of the page. Once you have the link on an existing page, click on the link to start editing your new page.
- Use your personal page to store stuff or experiment etc. Click on your name on the top right hand side of the page to get to your personal page.
Other notes
As we develop our use of the wiki, we may wish to make use of other features of the Wiki such as the discussion pages. I include the information below in case this becomes relevant at a later date.
- There is a difference between a page (which appears as the 'article' tab at the top left of the screen) and the discussion page which is attached to it. Click on the discussion tab at the top of this page and have a look.
- The discussion pages are, funnily enough, for discussion! It is the space in which you can carry out dialogue about what is written on the front page. Anyone in this group can edit the front page AND the discussion page but the discussion page is hidden other from viewers - you need to be logged in to get there.
